Pouring rain and the Algonquin

Kayaking, Diamond Lake, MI, July 2011

I was trying to figure out why the Algonquin Hotel is boarded up. By “trying to figure out” I mean I wondered fleetingly about it as I walked by this morning. I’m hoping the union that’s been protesting there for the past several weeks has gained some traction. It was the painters and allied trades union, District Council 9, accusing the hotel of bleeding their workers dry, hence the giant inflatable bedbug, next to the giant inflatable rat. I love the city and its unsubtle symbolism. Communication is important and we wouldn’t want to leave anything up to chance. So many relationships to negotiate and people to support in as many ways as we can on any given day, week, month.
